Are you one of those people who stop to admire beautiful buildings and take photos to look at later? Then you’ll love Doha. Over the past few decades, the city has undergone an incredible transformation. Once a desert town, Doha is now filled with skyscrapers and futuristic structures. While the city undoubtedly embraces the future, it also fervently holds onto its traditions. These buildings and structures have put Doha on the map as a haven for architecture.

Zig Zag Towers

One of the most eye-catching buildings in Doha is the Zig Zag Towers, also known as the West Bay Lagoon Plaza or the Dancing Towers. These twin buildings are the tallest and largest zig-zag-shaped residential towers in the world, making them a must-see for anyone interested in architecture. Built right by the sea between Lusail and The Pearl, the towers have 34 floors offering stunning views. One side overlooks the Arabian Gulf, while the other faces the city of Doha. At the base, the towers are connected by the Lagoona Mall.

Tornado Tower

It might not be the tallest or newest building in Doha, but Tornado Tower is definitely one of the most famous. Its hourglass shape will catch your eye the moment you step into the West Bay area. At night, the building truly comes to life, with lights that create over 35,000 different patterns. There’s also some good accommodation in the area if you want to stay close by. Al Najada Doha Hotel by Tivoli, one of the best hotels in Doha, is less than 15 minutes from Tornado Tower.

Lusail Multipurpose Sports Arena

Shaped like a seashell and coloured in soft tones inspired by Qatar’s sand, sea, and pearls, Al-Lusail Sports Arena is the definition of a showstopper. Modern and sleek, it’s the kind of building that makes you want to stop, admire, and snap a few photos. Unlike other stadiums, Al-Lusail Sports Arena can host a major basketball game and be ready for a full-blown concert just two hours later. It’s spacious enough for 16,000 people and is equipped with courts, warm-up zones, changing rooms, VIP areas, food spots, and shops.

Sports Dome at Aspire

This is not just any sports complex – it actually holds a Guinness World Record as the largest indoor multi-purpose sports dome in the world. That alone makes it a must-see for sports lovers and architecture fans. Standing at 46 metres, the dome has a sloping roof that’s hard to miss. Inside, it’s packed with a full football stadium, a track-and-field arena, a swimming pool stadium, fencing pistes, martial arts arenas, table tennis courts, and squash courts. The blue dome is connected to Aspire Academy and is just a short walk from Villaggio Mall. The fact that it won a Distinction Award from the IOC/IAKS says a lot about how impressive it is.

Doha Tower

Also known as Burj Doha, Doha Tower is another of the city’s architecturally significant buildings. Its cylindrical shape and stunning lattice-style exterior are truly eye-catching. Located right by the Corniche and not far from the upcoming Al Bidda metro station, Doha Tower sits in the heart of the business district. The tower is wrapped in beautiful metalwork – not just for aesthetics, but also to block out the strong sun. If you think it’s striking during the day, just wait until the sun goes down. At night, the entire tower lights up with a dazzling display, making it one of the most photogenic landmarks in the city.

Katara Art Centre

Another place an architecture enthusiast would love is the Katara Art Centre. You’ll find it in Katara Cultural Village, also known as the Valley of Cultures. The whole village is filled with various beautiful structures – a modern tribute to traditional Qatari architecture. Courtyards, dovecotes, overhanging roofs, and wind catchers are just some of the elements you’ll see there. At the centre, overlooking the sea, is the amphitheatre. It’s Greek in style, but with unmistakable Islamic architectural touches. At any one time, it can accommodate up to 5,000 people. The amphitheatre has been graced by artists, singers, and dancers – in 2011, even Vangelis, a world-renowned composer, performed here.
